THE PROGRAM

The GROB apprenticeship program is an opportunity to learn an in-demand trade, earn a debt-free college degree, and start your career at a world-class machine tool manufacturer - all while being paid! No experience in manufacturing? None needed! The combination of GROB's in-house training program and your college classes will prepare you to become a highly-skilled mechanical or electrical technician at GROB in just two years.

Electro-Mechanical Engineering Technology

The Electro-Mechanical Engineering Technology Program offers students the opportunity to build a career maintaining integrated manufacturing systems found in advanced manufacturing. The program leads students through a mechatronics approach to maintaining and troubleshooting highly-automated, complex manufacturing systems that include programmable logic controllers, robots, various types of drives, sensors, photoeyes, and electrohydraulics and electropnuematics.

YOUR APPRENTICESHIP JOURNEY

The apprenticeship is a 4 year committment, which includes 2 years of technical training and 2 years of workforce placement.

Year 1
  • Basic Training for the first 18 weeks to determine which path (mechanical or electrical) you will pursue.
  • The first year is spent in the Apprenticeship Training Area further developing your technical skills in either mechanical or electrical work. This includes hands-on projects and classroom curriculum taught by our GROB Training Instructors.
Year 2
  • Rotate through various departments across GROB working and learning alongside experienced employees
  • Learn the skills needed to be successful in each department
  • Discover what areas interest you the most to help find your ideal department placement
Year 3 & 4
  • After graduating from Rhodes State College, you will be placed into our regular workforce in a specific department.
  • Continue to accrue on-the-job training hours, which goes towards your state-recognized Journeyperson's card.
  • In Year 4 you will receive your Certificate of Completion of Apprenticeship issued by the Ohio State Apprenticeship Council in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Labor. This journeyperson card will certify you as an Industrial Machinist System Technician.

CAREER PATHWAYS

GROB offers two different apprenticeship pathways - mechanical and electrical. All apprentices earn an Electro-Mechanical Engineering Technology degree from Rhodes, but their in-house training at GROB is what sets the two pathways apart.

Mechanical Pathway

Skills learned: manual machining, assembly, layout, hand tool knowledge, work safety, print reading Potential Department Placements: Machine Shop, Sub Assembly, Final Assembly, Universal, Fluids, Fabrication

Electrical Pathway

Skills Learned: PLC Programming, print reading, wiring, soldering, tool knowledge, electrical safety Potential Department Placements: Final Electrical, Debug, Robots, Panel Assembly

BECOMING A GROB APPRENTICE

Basic Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; graduating high school seniors may also apply
  • Willingness to learn
  • Self-motivated
  • Strong work ethic
  • Strong math and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work alone and in a team environment
  • 4 year commitment

Application Process

  1. Submit an online application here. Attach your resume and most recent high school (or college) transcript.
  2. GROB will review your application and contact you with the next steps if moving forward in the process
  3. Applicants selected to move forward will complete an Aptitude Test held at Rhodes State College
  4. GROB will receive the Aptitude Test results and then determine who will be invited for an interview

  • Our Apprenticeship Training staff is available to visit your classroom to discuss careeer opportunities at GROB
  • Class tours of GROB may also be scheduled. Please note that our max capacity for school tours is 50 people per tour (students + chaperones)
